Food Scraps (menstrual blood in water for the plants in an empty zhug jar and burnt roof tar from the independence day barbeque)
diptych, analog photography, inkjet print, 120X70 cm, 2020
In the diptych "Food Scraps", an alternative food chain that challenges conventional perceptions is offered. Who and what eats who and what?
Plants eat human blood, humans eat zhug (spicy Yemenite paste), humans eat barbeque, barbeque eats roof, one's independence eats another's independence. Everything burns.
The word "scraps" was chosen since the point of view of the materials in hand is of waste: Menstrual blood is not considered nourishing but repulsive, and although there is a current discourse about it, it is still a material that is being pushed away from the public space: It will forever be seen as abject.
The roof tar was not burned on purpose. Afterwards, it required several quick and systematic actions to prevent serious damage and to hide it: Water was poured, objects were placed between the roof and the barbeque and later on a couch was placed above the burnt tar. Still, the mark is there, unable to be vanished. The material bleeding happened, and there is no way to fully sterilize its presence from the space.
