Ginat Haba'ashat (Haba'ashat Garden)

(Community guerilla gardening project; site specific, 2020-2021)

Ginat Haba'ashat is a community guerilla garden established during covid-19 lockdowns in Haba'ashat st., Yaffo, where I live, on a municipally owned neglected piece of land. It is a community-based project, in which all were invited to work the land, grow food and interact with neighbors. This project was meant to provide a relief for the residents of the street, an opportunity to both avoid lockdown refusal (stay within 100/500 m range of home and interact only in a small group) and be able to step outside for a positive and productive social gathering and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

After inquiring and mapping the already established and potential community gardens in the area, I decided to set foot in the territory most close to home, were I could have the most direct discourse with my neighbors and fellow gardeners. While in the beginning we drew most of our water from generous neighboring buildings, as the project progressed I was able to secure support from the sustainability department in the Tel Aviv-Yaffo municipality, which gave our garden better infrastructure, tools, composters, plants and overall budgetary freedom.

Our group, multicultural as the aera in which we live in, met in the garden 1-2 a week for months, formed bonds and friendships and left a significant signature on the culture of our neighborhood.
