Tic
Technologically synchronized love making act), still from an edited video work, inkjet print, 49X54 cm (part of a series), 2020
The series "Tic" was conceived for an exhibition about sexuality for ZUZU gallery in Emek Hefer. For the piece, I recorded a video sex-chat I had with a loved one while I was staying in New York and he in Tel Aviv. During the chat, we both took off our clothes in front of our screens, leaned back into our memories of each other and tried to have a barren love-making act from afar.
Afterwards, I edited the videos into a mirror-like visual and framed it in my phone's layout. I synchronized us looking in the eyes, reaching with our hands, presenting ourselves, moving similarly, as if we were perfectly coordinated. In order to preserve the digital experience and to respect my partner's privacy, the work is heavily edited. The aesthetics that was created lives in the realms of medical scans, heat signatures and bad reception.
"Tic" is the beginning of the word "Communication" in Hebrew (Tikshoret), a concept that is being challenged in this work. Even though the use of online platforms is the canon nowadays and communication is being retreated to the distance the screen allows, human touch cannot be felt without a close body. This work, that was born out of no choice from a very personal place, is the face of society during (and after?) COVID-19.
